Nittaku‘s Moristo SP has been one of the most popular short pimple rubbers in our range of products. The Moristo SP AX, a reworked version of the Moristo SP, is another interesting short pimple rubber created by the Japanese brand. This rubber is the result of a cooperation between Nittaku and the German rubber specialist ESN.
Just like its predecessor, it features a soft, yet very dynamic 30° sponge. However, its pimple geometry is very different. The goal was to develop a rubber which provides even more speed and spin – and the developers definitely reached their goal! Our internal tests have shown that both rubbers are in fact completely different from each other.
The Moristo SP AX is truly a very fast rubber. Even the 1.8mm version, which was tested in combination with an All+ blade, provides exceptionally high speed values. The most exciting feature of this rubber, however, is its enormous spin power! The Moristo SP AX’s characteristics almost resemble those of reversed pimples. When serving, returning, or pushing, the rubber facilitates techniques normally seen in players using reversed pimples, and it creates almost the same amount of spin.
Despite these unusual characeristics, this rubber still works best when playing close to the table, where it allows for very fast and high-rotation strokes which put the opponent under huge pressure. Opponents will also often be surprised by the rubber’s high spin as they do not expect this from a short pimple rubber. Due to its high speed, the AX version offers slightly less control and a less pronounced disruptive effect than the Moristo SP. So which of these rubbers should you choose? ;
spinfactory.de recommends:
- the Moristo SP AX
to players close to the table relying on very high speed and vigour while also using reversed pimple techniques, opening topspin strokes and active blocks. - den Morist SP
to players close to the table looking for a rubber for the backhand side which offers very high control and a certain rotation (service/return & spin opening).
Both rubbers definitely suit close-to-table play, given that the balls flight trajectory is too straight and flat from mid-distance.
